I am looking to put new pipes on my m50. I want to know if I have to run the fuel controller with just pipes?

Most of what I''ve read is the fuel controller is really only needed if the air intake side is modified. I''ve also read removing the battery cable after the mod will reset the CPU, and it will self-adjust for minor exhaust mods. I debaffled my pipes, and saw no symptoms of running lean after the mod.
